The Action studies the abyssal circulation, by analyzing the available data, gathering in situ information and considering results from models. It investigates the processes regulating the exchanges between coastal and deep environment in the test areas with a multidisciplinary approach (physical-biogeochemical parameters) in order to define the typical patterns of the deep dynamics, the mixing rates, the interaction with the intermediate circulation, the contribution of external forcing (air-sea flows), the replacement times, the sedimentation processes and the anthropogenic component of CO2 in the abyssal layers. Moreover, it studies the spatial and temporal variability of these processes and the effect on connectivity of populations settled in distinct deep habitats.
